Annual Conference The 2011 NCAZO 30th Anniversary Annual Conference turned out to be great success. The conference was held at the Courtyard Marriott at Carolina Beach from Sunday, July 24th through Wednesday, July 27th. Attendance was good with 93 members, 3 non-members and 9 first time attendees. The conference kicked off Monday morning with opening remarks from Association President Kevin Medeiros and a welcome from Carolina Beach Mayor, the Honorable Joel Macon. Monday was 80’s retro day as many of the members dressed in their best 1980’s outfits to commemorate the association’s beginnings in 1981. Congratulations to Angela Birchett of Chatham County, and Earl Phipps of the City of Greenville for winning the awards for having the best female and male 80’s attire. We would like to thank all of you that participated and would like to give a special thanks to Angela Birchett and Janice Duncan for putting all the 80’s activities together. We would also like to thank Andy Thomas for putting together the picture boards showing the NCAZO throughout the years. The Monday sessions had an agricultural theme starting out with a presentation from Steve Woodson with the North Carolina Farm Bureau on regulations and exemptions dealing with “Bona Fide Farms in counties and municipalities. The second session was on “How Zoning can Impact the Farmer” presented by David McLeod, Assistant Commissioner of Legal Affairs and Martha Glass, Manager of the Agritourism Office with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The afternoon session began with a presentation from Carl Martin, Building Code Consultant, with the Engineering Division, Office of State Fire Marshal, (OSFM) on “Flood Plains, Farm Buildings, and other Agricultural Exemptions”. The last session was presented by Ted Feitshans and Brandon King with the North Carolina State Extension on new legislation pertaining to ETJ’S and annexation of agricultural properties. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to each of these speakers who presented a variety of information on agricultural issues that affect many of us in our jobs. Tuesday was a full day of presentations starting off with Randy Mundt, NCEM presenting Floodplain updates and NFIP information. The next session was presented by Teresa L. Lockamy, Human Resource consultant for the City of Greensboro. Theresa gave a presentation on “You want me to do what” Communication Techniques to deliver Great Customer Service. Theresa is a wonderful speaker and gets the audience involved in the discussion. Tuesday afternoon sessions were led by perennial favorites Rich Ducker and Dave Owens from the School of Government. As always the membership received valuable information concerning current zoning cases and legislative updates. We wrapped up Tuesday’s session with our “Where do we go from here?” session and the Board was given some great ideas and feedback for things to look for and accomplish for the future. Tuesday night the conference’s 30th Annual Banquet and Award Ceremony took place on the Winner Princess Queen with a good meal and entertainment provided by our membership. The three hour scenic cruise departed from the docks at Carolina Beach at 6:00 pm and the fun began shortly thereafter. Once the music began even a little rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the members as they danced to 80’s music and enjoyed themselves on the promenade deck as we cruised on the inland waterway. President Kevin Medeiros presided over the Awards ceremony. Congratulations go out to Stephanie Hobbs, Surf City on being awarded the 2011 NCAZO Scholarship Award of $1000.00. The NCAZO Zoning Official of the Year award went to Randy Guthrie; AICP from the City of Goldsboro, and the award for the 2011 NCAZO Member of the Year was presented to Grace D. Smith, AICP, CZO from Durham City-County. Congratulations go out to all our award winners as they were each deserving of the honors they received. The conference wrapped up Wednesday morning with the business breakfast meeting and swearing in of the new officers. The Association welcomes new President David Sudderth, First Vice-President Ron Smith, Second Vice-President Brian Sifford, Treasurer Grace Smith and new Board member Susie Morris with Cabarrus County who will be representing the western district. Special thanks go out to Ron Smith, Conference Chair and the entire Board of Directors for a job well done in planning and putting on the conference. Thank you to all who participated and assisted with the conference and especially to the membership for their continued support of the association for the past thirty (30) years. Hope to see you all in Cary for the Mid-Winter Workshop, February 19-21, 2011.
Annual Conference The 2010 NCAZO Summer Annual Conference kicked off on Sunday, July 25th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Asheville, NC. A total of 91 NCAZO members attended the conference with 7 guest speakers. Session topics included “Do’s and Don’ts of Zoning by Bill Dunston, “Historic District Zoning: Design Police or Quality Cops?” by LuAnn Monson, Mr. Jim Bradshaw’s “Zoning -An Opportunity for Improvement “, and our main speaker Mike Collins on “Dealing with workplace stresses”. Of course, Rich Ducker and Dave Owens from UNC School of Government gave their legislative updates. Entertainment for Sunday night’s social and Tuesday night’s dinner banquet was provided by “Wise Apple” bluegrass band. Evaluations for the conference were mostly positive from the attendees. There were some complaints about the room temperature in the conference meeting space. Further investigation revealed that the air conditioning compressor for that particular meeting space was faulty. The hotel quickly apologized for the inconvenience to us. The Wednesday morning business breakfast meeting went well with Loray Averett departing as the 2009-2010 NCAZO president, and Kevin Medeiros assuming the duties of the NCAZO president for 2010-2011.
